next book: Managing the automobile campus…

by Alexandra den Heijer

Last week was all about German universities and campuses. I was traveling with a group of Dutch campus managers and we visited campuses of TU Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians University Munchen, Stuttgart University and Heidelberg University. The lectures and tours confirmed our collective problems and similar challenges: many 60s and 70s buildings, (re)considering city campuses, sustainability issues, housing for international students and creating a place to meet. Visiting other campuses always gives you new ideas, but usually also makes you proud of what you have and what you do.

The campus tours and lectures were combined with short visits to the sites of BMW (BMW Welt @ Olympia Park Munich), Mercedes Benz (Museum, architect UN Studio) and Porsche (Museum, Delugan Meissl Associated Architects), which could also be considered as campuses. The labs, production halls, flagship stores, museums, restaurants and espresso bars – sometimes spread over the city and usually concentrated on one site – and their employment base of knowledge workers and relations to regional universities indicate many similarities. Consequently, my next book could be called “Managing the automobile campus”…

Back from Scotland

After a very inspiring visit to Scotland – University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Strathclyde University – it is confirmed (again) that Europe has so much to offer: a combination of campuses that breathe academic history in vibrant knowledge cities.

University of Glasgow campus - the value of academic history and heritage buildings

I also discovered that we (in the Netherlands) offer students beautiful housing: spacious rooms and apartments that could be used as a competitive advantage for the Dutch learning experience.

PS I uploaded some new publications (see DOWNLOADS).

Exactly 3 years after the fire

some members of the BK city project group - at the site where it all started

hard to believe the 42.000 m2 building was here"

Seems like a decade – the fire on May 13, 2008 – but it is really only three years… The empty site hardly shows any sign of the > 40.000 m2 Architecture building (see photos). Of course we all have our memories, from just a few to decades of work and from sharing some time to sharing life and love.

Nevertheless, we are proud of everything that happened after the fire and the new place to meet, work, live and love that we collectively created at BK city.

Publicity… also for BK city

In the past weeks I have written two columns, an article (in Dutch) and a paper (in English). The newest column can be found by clicking this link nieuwbrief gebiedsontwikkeling.nu. I will upload the PDFs of all publications as soon as I receive them from the publishers – see DOWNLOADS.
In the meantime our project BK city received new awards and nominations in the past weeks. I am very proud of the EU price (Europa Nostra) for Cultural Heritage, both as a member of the BK city project team and as a user of the building – see CASE BK CITY for more information.
