Campus NL 2023-2027: research for and by universities
Following the success of Campus NL research in 2015-2017, the TU Delft Campus Research Team led by Alexandra den Heijer has started another 4-year Campus NL research process in 2023. Science and practice will work closely together in this process of knowledge sharing. From the press release:
“Universities in the Netherlands face a number of common challenges in managing their campuses. These include dilemmas concerning hybrid working and studying, dynamics in the numbers of incoming students, the shortage of (student) housing, sustainability and a healthy work environment. Campus NL 2015-1017: investing in the future
The “Campus NL” research project explored past, present and future of the Dutch campus, based on data of all 14 Dutch universities. It describes the changes in the past 10 years and identifies 10 campus trends and strategic choices for the future, expressed in values, costs, user demands and footprint in m2. Afgelopen 15 jaar is met alle universiteiten samengewerkt aan het verbeteren van de managementinformatie over de universiteitscampus, met het doel beter in staat te zijn onderwijs, onderzoek en kennisvalorisatie zo goed mogelijk te ondersteunen en ter onderbouwing van campusbeleid en huisvestingsbeslissingen.
Het Campus NL rapport beschrijft verleden, heden en toekomstkeuzes voor Campus NL op basis van data van de veertien Nederlandse researchuniversiteiten.
TU Delft doet al sinds 1995 onderzoek naar campusmanagement en de toekomst van de universiteitscampus. Onderzoekers van de Faculteit Bouwkunde, afdeling Management in the Built Environment (MBE) hebben zich afgelopen twintig jaar verdiept in trends op de campus en in campusbeslissingen en de managementinformatie die daarvoor nodig is.
Het “campus research team” heeft een wisselde bezetting van academische stafleden, postdocs, promovendi en Master-studenten en wordt inhoudelijk geleid door Alexandra den Heijer, die al decennia onderzoek doet naar universiteitscampussen en in 2011 gepromoveerd is op het onderwerp, resulterend in het boek “Managing the university campus”.
Onderzoeksteam Campus NL
Voor het Campus NL onderzoek bestond het team uit een aantal specialisten op het gebied van Vastgoedmanagement, Bouweconomie, Arbeids- en Organisatiepsychologie en Besliskunde, met kennis van en ervaring met strategisch voorraadbeheer, gebouw- en werkplekconcepten, beslissingsondersteunende informatie en economische haalbaarheid. Aan het team waren ook twee studenten toegevoegd die niet alleen aanwezig waren bij de interviews als onderzoeksassistenten, maar ook het studentperspectief konden toevoegen aan de discussies over de huidige en toekomstige campus. De omslag en het binnenwerk van Campus NL is ontworpen door Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel in nauwe samenwerking met Alexandra den Heijer, net als bij Alexandra’s proefschrift in 2011. Meer informatie over (de samenwerking met) Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel, die ook lid is (geweest) van het Campus Research Team en gespecialiseerd is in “science parks” en “innovation districts”, is te vinden onder BOOK DESIGN.
Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel en Alexandra den Heijer hebben voor Campus NL wederom samengewerkt bij het grafisch ontwerp van de cover en het binnenwerk. Flavia is inmiddels gepromoveerd op “Technology campuses and cities”, al sinds 2011 lid van het Campus Research Team en werkt met Alexandra aan het project “European campus”
Summary Campus NL in English
In the Netherlands fourteen publicly funded research universities accommodate more than 270.000 students and 53.000 staff members – together they manage about 4,4 million m2 Campus NL (gross floor area, data 2015/2016). This research project elaborates on past, present and future of Campus NL, based on literature, previous campus research – including Den Heijer’s dissertation (2011) – analysis of recent (campus) strategy reports and interviews in 2016 with more than 35 campus directors, policy makers and board members of the fourteen Dutch universities.
The results of this research are presented in four steps, aligning with the four tasks to design an accommodation strategy (DAS steps): (step 1) assessing the campus anno 2016, compared to 2006 and clarified with historical background, (step 2) exploring changing demand, based on developments in society and higher education, (step 3) generating future models, derived from ten campus trends and (step 4) defining strategic choices for Campus NL and their functional, financial and physical consequences for universities.
This research project covers subjects like the changing academic place to learn and work, the total costs of (campus) ownership and sustainable campus ambitions. The paper will also discuss how applicable both the (DAS) research method and Campus NL results are to other universities and their campuses.
