“Leading the way” AUDE conference 2012

by Alexandra den Heijer

On April 2, 2012 I was invited to speak at Loughborough University for the AUDE conference (the UK Association of University Directors of Estates). The hand-out of the presentation can be found under DOWNLOADS after my presentation. The 3-minute movie “The making of BK city” can be found with a link to YouTube under CASE BK CITY.

European Univer-cities in the top 150 worldwide - figure from Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel's research

Lessons so far:
-1- the importance of ‘managing expectations’ – engaging both students and staff in the strategic, financial and physical context (and challenges) to put their functional demands into perspective, which also is a key factor in their satisfaction;
-2- the relation between the physical campus and regional knowledge economy (‘town gown’ – univer-city) – see figure Knowledge cities in Europe, representing universities in the global top 150, source QS Times Higher Education ranking 2011, edited by PhD researcher Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel, see BOOK DESIGN for her background and résumé;
-3- balancing the strategy of ‘creating a community and home base’ and sharing space and collaborating with partners in higher education, business or industry;
-4- considering students as long-term stakeholders and not as customers; when students become alumni the value of their diploma will be associated with the quality of the institution for life and alumni could (and do) also play an important role in education and research, in the primary processes (giving lectures) and in branding their ‘alma mater’ in practice. This could be a basis for alumni funding.

EUA conference “Sustainable Universities”

by Alexandra den Heijer

I really enjoyed the annual EUA conference, hosted by the University of Warwick. I will write more about the content later. My contribution (presentation about innovative campus management) can be found under DOWNLOADS – including a link to my propositions in English, German, French, Spanish and -of course- Dutch: 10 PROPOSITIONS .

Exploring univer-cities

by Alexandra den Heijer

Today I attended the conference “Gebiedsontwikkeling Slim Vlottrekken” [Urban area development: smart solutions – see http://www.gebiedsontwikkling.nu] in Utrecht to present one of the spin-offs of my campus research project: “Managing the univer-city”. We use this term for the merged model of the campus and/in/as the city [“and/in/as” depends on both the physical setting and how well urban authorities and universities collaborate].

For the spin-off project “Managing the univer-city” TU Delft hired PhD candidate Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel, who also connected the knowledge city and the university campus in her Master thesis. More about her profile and background can be found under BOOK DESIGN (because Flavia was responsible for the graphic design of the book). For this project we collaborate with the academic groups of Urban Area Development, Corporate Real Estate Management, Urbanism and Urban Economics.

For publications and recent presentations about univer-cities, “campus & city” and knowledge cities scroll the (chronological) list under DOWNLOADS. A review in Dutch online can be found online: gebiedsontwikkeling.nu

German group in Groningen

by Alexandra den Heijer

Today a German group from HIS (Hochschul-Informations-System) visits Groningen University for a workshop to compare the Dutch and German situation at universities (and university campuses). My contribution to the discussion can be found under DOWNLOADS. Both the inner-city campuses and the Zernike campus looked even more beautiful on this Spring day. As a warm welcome Groningen University added the German flag to the flags in front of their iconic “Akademiegebouw”, see photo below. 20120308-133035.jpg

Exactly one year ago…

by Alexandra den Heijer

One year ago – on Friday March 4, 2011 – I defended my PhD research and launched my book… When people asked me then: what’s next? I would reply “something international” or “European knowledge network”, but frankly… I did not have a plan. After March 4 I just started to send copies of my book to academic friends and professional colleagues abroad. And that must have worked given the number of invitation I received to publish and speak (see DOWNLOADS and TOUR). My European network is actually a fact after a year.

Coincidentally - today March 4, 2012 - the ebook and the second edition of the physical book are nr. 1+2 in my publisher's top seller top 5 again!

My ‘tour schedule’ (see TOUR) also protected me from the overload of educational activities in the past year. Of course I understand that education is an important part of my job – and I love it – but organising education for 210 students (fall semester) and 320 students (spring semester) also tends to keep you from concentrating on research. Travelling forced me to focus on (the next step in) my research: the European campus. Three months after my defence I was invited to speak at the annual conference of the European University Association (EUA), which is in three weeks: March 23, 2012. In the past year my preliminary conclusions about ‘opportunities and threats of the European campus’ have been confirmed by campus managers, directors of estate and representatives of ministries of Education & Science. Check out ‘TOUR’ to see which countries I visited (or who visited me in Delft/Rotterdam/Utrecht) in the past year.

In the next 6 weeks I am looking at 5 more lectures for international audiences and 2 at national events, which sometimes makes me think that I am overdoing it a little… even though I am enjoying every lecture. Next to me on the photo of the PhD defence is one of two paranimphs Flavia Curvelo Magdaniel. She helped me with the graphic design of the book (see BOOK DESIGN) and is now working at TU Delft as a PhD candidate herself. Her research subject is closely related to mine: the knowledge city. With her and with my European network I will take my research to the next phase in the next year, and keep you informed about the results.

Laudatio

Laudatio of prof. dr. ir. Hugo Priemus after my PhD defence EXACTLY one year ago today

P.S. Coincidentally – today March 4, 2012 – the ebook and the second edition of the physical book are nr. 1+2 in my publisher’s top seller top 5 again! It is interesting that my book is still referred to as ‘new’… because it is the recently published second edition.

From 320 students to 1001 books

by Alexandra den Heijer

While the snow not only covered Finnish campuses – but also our Delft campus – huge groups of students filled up (and warmed up) our lecture halls and design studios. Being responsible for their 30 ECTS curriculum this semester made me focus on something else than research, lectures abroad and simple things like replying all those (voice)mail messages.

Spring semester started with 320 students

The most challenging part of the semester – 320 student playing a management game – ended today. This means I have a little more time to enjoy and distribute the second edition of the book (1000 more copies + 1, see photo), starting with sending 130 copies to the UK – for attendants of AUDE conference where I will be speaking – and 120 to universities in the Netherlands.

our TU Delft library after the first day of snow (February 3)

In the meantime I also included more ‘tour dates’ to my schedule (see TOUR). I still can’t believe how international this research has become in less than one year… I never thought I would bring the book all the way to South Korea, and in the next year I will do that… twice. However overwhelming, I am also struggling with an overload of (international) opportunities and limited time. My mailbox is exploding and I feel bad about not being able to respond to everyone personally.

Alexandra den Heijer with the second edition of her book (+1000 copies)

the second edition of the book arrived last month (+1000 copies)

Nonetheless, the busy schedule still allows time to publish. Deadlines still work for me, apparently. I will soon add a separate PUBLICATIONS menu to this blog, to split the written publications like articles in journals and magazines from the other DOWNLOADS like hand-outs of presentations. This month there will be two new publications: a book chapter in “Creative Knowledge Cities” (release February 2012, Edward Elgar Publishing – http://www.e-elgar.co.uk) and an article in CELE Exchange (OECD Centre for Educational Learning Environments). I will upload the latter as soon as it is released.

Managing the winter campus

Last week in Finland gave me the opportunity to enjoy the first snow of this winter. Every campus looks beautiful covered with snow. Nonetheless, I remember how months of snow challenged all facilities staff last two winters in the Netherlands, to make sure it was “academic business as usual”.

Image

The venue of the seminar was Aalto University’s Venture Garage (Otaniemi campus in Espoo) – see http://aaltovg.com – which also included a “startup sauna”. The topic of the seminar was Future Learning Environments and my keynote merged theory and practice (see downloads) on this subject.

I want to thank Aalto University for their hospitality, especially Suvi Nenonen and Jarkko Leinonen. Something tells me that I will be back soon…

While students are preparing for exams…

by Alexandra den Heijer

… I am continuing my European winter tour in Scotland and Finland (where I am now, in the snow). Last week’s presentation for University of Strathclyde can be found under DOWNLOADS. This also goes for the spontaneous (thanks to Ana Cristobal) presentation at Page/Park architecture studio in Glasgow (www.pagepark.co.uk), which was the same one I gave in Barcelona early November.

I can not write enough about how blessed I feel to be given these opportunities to meet inspiring people in beautiful cities (and beautiful people in inspiring cities…). I also consider it to be a reward for investing time and money in my own education. I will keep encouraging my students to do the same… and hope they make the best of this semester’s exams.

Note: the photo below was taken last week of University of Strathclyde’s Assembly Hall, just before the students came in.

Could 2012 be happier than 2011?

by Alexandra den Heijer

Looking back on 2011 I feel blessed with all the opportunities to travel and meet new people. My academic and professional networks have grown rapidly and I will share more knowledge in these networks in 2012. This is no New Year’s resolution, but a promise. A happy 2012 to you all.

Second edition is available for pre-order

by Alexandra den Heijer

Last week I got a ‘go’ for the second edition of the book after about 700 copies of the first edition were distributed worldwide. The second edition (December 2011) can be considered a reprint, even though I corrected small things (not effecting the content) that were already changed in the eBook since it was released in March 2011. The physical book (2nd edition) is now available for pre-order by clicking on the book cover on the right, which will link to the publisher’s website. A free preview (or the complete eBook) can be retrieved from the iBookstore (see photo below).
